our products
Our chefs, bakers and our owner are all Celiacs. We have struggled
ourselves with finding high-quality, delicious baked goods that
are indiscernible from our favorite gluten-filled products.
Our goal at Stowe Meadows Bakery is as simple as our name -- create gluten-free
and wheat-free baked goods, trail mixes and bath products that are
indiscernible from the finest, high-caliber gluten-based products
available.
We started our business with one thought, make phenomenal Gluten-Free
desserts. No compromises, no "well, it is really good for
Gluten-Free". When experimenting with my grandmothers
recipe for Rum Balls, my daughter said, "Mom, can't you just Stowe Meadows Bakery? Our name and our mission were born. We want to
"Stowe Meadows Bakery", remove it, with no change in taste, quality,
texture or fragrance. We use only the highest-quality
ingredients and we never compromise on flavor. We use organic
ingredients where we can and we never use preservatives, artificial
colors, sweeteners or hydrogenated oils.
Our products are made by hand in small batches in Gluten-Free
kitchens.
Our recipes are adapted from my own family cookbook. As
a Southerner, baking, homemade desserts and "secret" recipes are
a way of life. The most difficult thing about
adjusting to a Gluten-Free lifestyle was giving up the flavors of
home. Mama's brownies, cakes, pies and Grandmother's special cookies
and snacks became a thing of the past nearly overnight with my diagnosis.
As the youngest of five children, all diagnosed with Celiac Disease,
our family has struggled with the basics of dining out, adjusting
our daily menus, finding alternative ingredients, and adjusting
recipes. When we successfully "re-engineered" a few family
favorites, I knew we were on to something.
In 2005 we opened Stowe Meadows Inn in Stowe, VT. Our Bed
& Breakfast offers Gluten-Free dining for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
We offer all of our products to our guests and we have found that
more and more "non-Celiac" customer are ordering our Gluten-Free
products. Coffee shops in New Hampshire and Vermont now carry
Chocolate Cake, Brownies and Pecan Pies baked in our kitchens and
have removed the Gluten-Filled counterparts from their menus.
That is how good our products are.
We are often asked how we know that a new product is ready for
the menu. That is completely determined by our taste-testers.
In a somewhat unscientific, but so far, 100% reliable approach,
our children are the flavor police. Only when they both say
"that tastes great Mom" do we continue with product development.
Each product must not only taste great, but it must freeze well,
ship well and have a non-crumbly texture. We also test-market
new menu items at Stowe Meadows before products are made available
to retailers, grocers or on-line customers.
We are so excited about our products! We invite you to
try them and please let us know what you think! To see response
so far, please don't skip our customer testimonials.
